The Human Rights Committee of the Consultative Council was formed by virtue of Amiri Order No. 24 of 1999, and it is a committee comprising members elected from amongst the Consultative Council in The Kingdom.

The Committee performs its duties independently of the Consultative Council. For this reason, it is not subject to any supervision by the Consultative Council or any government authority in the course of carrying its prerogatives and powers. Therefore, its resolutions and recommendations are not subject to the Consultative Council’s approval or discussion, but are directly submitted to the King of Bahrain Kingdom and the Prime Minister to take appropriate actions.

This independence is further enhanced by the powers which have been vested in the Committee to lay down Bye-Laws for organizing activities and confirm its independence.

As regards the powers and prerogatives of the Committee, they are not in any case less than those of any committee or organization working in this field.  The Committee follows up human rights and advocates their protection and finds appropriate  solutions. It also takes part with the concerned authorities in raising awareness of human rights, in addition to furthering contacts and strengthening relationships with international organizations concerned with human rights.

The Committee also participates in seminars, conducts research and studies and takes part in Arab and international parliamentarian meetings dealing with human rights.

The Human Rights Committee also reviews legislation and regulations in force, in respect of matters which are part of human rights and recommends changes as it deems necessary.
